With the inability to carry heavy equipment and difficulty in setting up, I wondered if I would be able to make music with my body alone. But the direct impetus was when I got sick during a tour in 2017. This idea has been brewing for a long time. That’s when I thought I could paint a picture with my voice. When I dubbed my own voice, a completely different world emerged that could not be described in the context of melody, harmony, rhythm and sound technology. It was in 1980, when I recorded my first solo single, that I realised that I could create a work using only my voice. Your previous album, ‘Voice Hardcore’, used only your voice, which itself is a calling card of yourself as an artist.

"I've never made a mix before, so I decided to give it a go. Ahead of its release, we were lucky enough to ask Phew some questions on the record, and are ecstatic to present her first ever recorded mix. Now, Disciples prepare to release what may be considered the third album in this trilogy, ‘ Vertigo KO’, which combines the essential natures of ‘ Light Sleep‘, and ‘ Voice Hardcore‘. Scarcely a year later and a follow up arrives by way of 2018’s ‘ Voice Hardcore‘, a jaw-dropping plunge into musical universes constructed solely using her iconic voice. The work constitutes a new sound and direction in her solo work, with rushing synths and early beat-machines instead of instruments typically associated with a punk background. Then, in 2017, a new album, ‘ Light Sleep ‘, lands. Years passed, seeing her record with the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, individuals from Can and Einstürzende Neubauten, and alongside other luminaries. My message is faith and hope.It’s somewhat telling that, when you search for Japanese avant-garde musician and vocalist Phew, real name Hiromi Moritani, the majority of the search results include the word ‘legendary’.Įmerging from the creative melting pot of the Japanese punk scene in the 70’s, Phew was part of the group Aunt Sally – an avant-punk-psychedelic-rock group from Osaka – who released just one record before disbanding. “I just want to share my life through this music. It’s no surprise that his sound-which Phew has dubbed “New CHUUCH”-is equally at home in the club or the church, and rappers like 1K Phew are proving that faith expressed with authenticity can be a welcome treat for listeners. His new mixtape Never Too Late is sure to build on his recent momentum, with bangers like “Back Then” and “Load of Me,” an anthem for those not afraid to embrace their individuality. “I’m just a young kid from Atlanta with something to say,” he confesses. His sing/rap flow has an infectious quality that is as catchy as it is alluring, and commercially viable as it is street-wise. Tracks like “TGIF” and “Church Gone Wild,” his biggest release to date, show an artist who is vibrant and dynamic. Phew’s ability to take his past and redeem it for a greater purpose is something you can feel and relate to. It wasn’t until he and his friends almost got shot one day that Phew decided to truly surrender his life to God and His plan. But even though Phew had it better than some of his peers, having grown up with two praying parents who encouraged him in his gifting, he still found himself going down a destructive path as a teen. “You can’t force anybody to follow your way but you can let your light shine and watch them come to you.” The past he speaks of is one that rings true for the many who grew up in similar circumstances. “The story I’m telling is how I overcame my obstacles,” he says.
This sort of genuine directness is what resonates with his audience and his growing platform is a clear reflection of his passion to share his story. That’s where the 1K comes from, always keeping it 1,000 no matter what.” To let him tell it: “I’m not worried about being politically correct.
There’s a sense of transparency that comes through in his music, a kind of refined rawness that can only be gained through experience and honing your craft. As evidenced by his mixtapes Sunday Night (2015) and Life (2016), Phew’s got plenty of swag and wisdom to impart, and people are beginning to connect with his candid approach. He’s fun and engaging, no doubt, but he’s so much more. At just 23 years old, Phew’s rise from local rapper with swagger to compelling artist equipped with a message, has been refreshing to watch. His smooth delivery and evocative vocal tone pair well with the bouncy, energetic production that defines his sound. 1K Phew is among a new breed of Atlanta artists taking the trap sensibility and elevating it to great effect.
